Does bleaching your hair really ruin your hair?

I have medium brown hair and I wanted to bleach it so its blonde, but I dont want to ruin my hair. Suggestions? I only want it blonde to see what it looks like.

I also have medium brown hair and used a heavy amount of Sun-In one summer to bleach it blond. It looked terrible, and my brown eyebrows stuck out like a sore thumb, but bleaching them would've looked kind of ridiculous. On top of that, it was extremely dry, frizzy, and unmanageable even though I have straight hair. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone. Learn to love your natural color. I haven't touched the color of my hair since then and it's very happy about that. :-) I don't know why so many people are unhappy with their hair color. Processed hair is not beautiful!

yes it does.the chemicals strip your hair of any moisture leaving your hair like hay,not just the ends the entire head of hair.use a good hydrating shampoo and conditioner.once a month i use placenta.

Hair bleach, like the bleach used on clothes, is an oxidizing agent. The melanin in your hair is oxidized to a colorless compound. Along with this, other components of your hair are also oxidized. Specifically, unbleached hair contains thiol groups. These help to stabilize the structure of your hair by oxidatively cross-linking to form disulfides. (As an aside, perms work by breaking the disulfide bonds and then forming new ones with the hair in the position you want it. The new disulfide bonds keep the hair curling the way it was set.)

Thiol groups are hydrophobic (water-repellent) and slippery. Hairs with thiol groups on them slide across each other easily. If thiol groups are oxidized by peroxide, they go beyond the disulfide stage to the sulfonic acid stage. (Exposure to air and sun can also oxidize the thiols

to sulfonic acids.) Sulfonic acids are hydrophilic (water attracting) and sticky. Hairs with sulfonic acids on them tend to tangle, unless you lubricate them. That's what conditioner is for.

Once the thiols on hair have been oxidized to sulfonic acids, there's really no going back. The hair won't be as manageable as before, so it's more necessary to use conditioner. New hair, of course, is still fine, so bleach doesn't permanenetly ruin hair that hasn't grown yet.

Keep in mind that bleach is a chemical that removes color. Any harsh can damage hair. Each person's skin and hair responds differently to chemicals. That is why we are all unique.

Hair dye has some chemical agents that are harmful to you, like formaldehyde. If you just want to see what you would look like as a blonde, I wouldn't spend all that money just to get straw-colored hair filled with split ends. There are computer programs out there that will help you, such as Hair Pro 2006.

dying it blonde to see what it looks like is a bad idea. if you dye your hair blonde, be prepared to have blonde hair! you can use a high-lift color made for dark hair (instead of bleach), but i would try some highlights first because it will be a dramatic change!
